I. An Overview of NCIST

North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST) is accountable to the Ministry of Emergency Management. Based on the work of its predecessor, Beijing Coal Management Institute (set up by the former Ministry of Coal Industry in 1984), it was reorganized as North China Mining College in 1993. In 1997 the College was assessed and evaluated by the former State Education Commission as one of the 27 demonstrative and key construction engineering colleges in China. By the year of 2002, another milestone was reached in the development of the college—an upgrading to an undergraduate institute, which was renamed as North China Institute of Science and Technology. In the year of 2011, NCIST was qualified to admit postgraduate students in the field of engineering (Safety Engineering). In December of 2016, the Academic Degree Committee of Hebei Provincial People's Government decided that our university should be the construction unit of the Master's Degree Granting Unit.

NCIST covers a total area of 800 mu, and has a further building area of 444,000. It offers 49 undergraduate programs, covering eight disciplinary fields: engineering, science, liberal arts, law, economics, managementeducation and arts, etc. Currently, NCIST has an excellent faculty team comprised of 1090 members in total, including 883 full-time teachers. Of all the professional teachers, about 81% hold master or doctoral degrees and nearly 49.6% are professors or associate professors. Furthermore, NCIST also has 2 academician (external) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 16 state-level senior experts specialized in various fields. Over 17,000 full-time students are currently attending various academic or vocational courses at the institute.

NCIST has 11 research centers distributed in the following fields, including gas prevention and control and water damage prevention and control; as well as 11 key laboratories of the provincial and ministerial level, including 8 science and technology platforms of Ministry of Emergency Management and 3 science and technology platforms of Hebei Province. The facilities and equipment for teaching and research are currently valued at 190,000,000 RMB. Modern teaching technology is so widely applied in NCIST that it serves as a network base for the China Education and Research Network (CERNET).The NCIST library has a large collection of 1,300,000 books and 1227 newspapers and periodicals (in both Chinese and other languages). Additionally, it has several millions of digital books, together with 26databases. Comprehensive physical equipments and facilities like athletic field, basketball court, indoor stadium and swimming pool are well equipped on the campus, providing a favorable teaching and living system.

NCIST maintains a long-term and stable cooperative relationship with the International Labor Organization and European Commission; meanwhile, joint education programs have been started with higher learning institutions and research institutes from America, UK, Italy and Latvia to cultivate professionals. One Belt One Road Initiative China-Latvia Center for Academic Exchange is set up at NCIST. Presently, more than 40 long-term foreign experts and teachers are employed by the institute. Moreover, the current enrollment of international students is about 50.

The Office of International Cooperative specializes in international students’ admission and daily service, offering a large range of language training programs to international students to be in accordance with different interests and needs. NCIST encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities related to Chinese folklore to experience Chinese culture further. NCIST welcomes you.
